I sing a song that will get me killed

It’s an outlawed song, banned by the rich;

an outlawed song only the poor can learn;

an outlawed song only pain can teach;

an outlawed song only outlaws can sing.

This outlaw song sings of things lost,

of things never gained, of rigged rules,

of things hoped for and worked for,

things swindled out of, bribed away, stolen, and lied about.

The song sings and the rich strive to kill it and

the outlaw singers who sing it.

But every time an outlaw dies,

ten incredible more singers are born to learn the song.
